Design

(Lyrics Robert Frost)

I found a dimpled spider, fat and white,
On a white heal-all, holding up a moth
Like a white piece of rigid satin cloth--
Assorted characters of death and blight
Mixed ready to begin the morning right,
Like the ingredients of a witches' broth--
A snow-drop spider, a flower like a froth,
And dead wings carried like a paper kite.

What had that flower to do with being white,
The wayside blue and innocent heal-all?
What brought the kindred spider to that height,
Then steered the white moth thither in the night?
What but design of darkness to appall?--
If design govern in a thing so small.

Album Notes

Album Notes

The songs on this album were written alongside the majority of those in the same cycle, i.e. Cosmic Dandy, Galactic Tea and Universal Spunk Candy. That said, whereas the songs on the other albums were largely written intact, the tunes that found their way to Dwellings mostly came from sonic fragments I had committed a series of tapes over several years, with the earliest dated back to the early 90s.

Some of the melodies here initially were assigned to other albums, notably Garden, Penny Crossings and The Horde, but eventually were distilled through a common theme of lighthearted pastoral as well as a desire to have an album of purely instrumental acoustic pieces, as they defined a substantial volume of material I had written for the guitar. Where possible I tried not to change the fragments, as their improvised and sometimes incomplete nature was, for me, part of their charm, but a few I extended a little where I thought it an organic enough process.

The main exceptions to the set list are Design, which was a simple repetitive arrangement of Robert Frost's beautiful poem, an instrumental rendition of The Bird Who Lost His Wings, as well as Amorillo, Ballantine, Love Bird and Tamarillo, which were written some time after the others but derived in a similar fashion from fragments recorded ad hoc. The only other changes were the names of a few pieces so they were more consistent with the style of the whole.

The title and cover of the album evoked both the fairy-tale whimsy that characterises many of the songs as well as shift they represented from the retro pop, blues, and rock on Cosmic Dandy, Galactic Tea and Universal Spunk Dandy to the more intuitive and authentic acoustic roots that informed Draggle Glade and Garden. The title also served to foreshadow the experimental acoustic soundscapes, and more broadly the psychological dwellings, of the Horde.
