About
This unit introduces music theory, ranging from fundamentals of sound through notes, rhythm and meter, scales, chords, through to aspects of melody and harmony. These principles are fundamental to traditional and modern musical composition, but awareness of them also facilitates an appreciation of music. Students will engage in these topics through practical activities, focused on an applied understanding through simple playing and composition. The course makes use of multiple instruments, but places the strongest emphasis on voice and piano, owing to both their accessibility and visual simplicity, respectively.
